Definition

Secession is the legal recognition of smaller territories disassociating from a higher political jurisdiction with the aim of self-governance and without the permission from the higher political jurisdiction.

Secession is a means to achieve self-determination.

Liechtenstein constitutionally guarantees the right of communes to secede from the state. The Canton of Jura's separation from Bern in Switzerland is a peaceful historical example. Liberland represents an attempt at secession by founding a new nation on unclaimed territory.
