Description

Seasteading refers to permanent floating settlements in international waters outside of nation state jurisdiction.

Discussion

Seasteading accommodates for innovative and progressive developments in:

  • feeding the hungry, through ocean farming, seaweed and aquaculture;
  • enrich the poor by way of economic freedom zones;
  • curing the sick with unconstrained medical research and hospital care;
  • environmental restoration by way of ocean symbiosis, algae, clean energy;
  • sustainable power using ocean thermal energy conversion as well as wave and solar energy; and
  • peaceful living through decentralized and voluntary governance.

Through the lens of political philosophy, seasteading contributes to the market for governance, giving people choice on what rules they must live by and with whom they interact.

Implementation

In 2008 a non-profit, The Seasteading Institute, was co-founded by Patri Friedman and Peter Thiel to advance the development of seasteading technologies and adoption.
